A five-phase system for
building a career with intention.
Modern Career Planning™ is not a course, a workshop, or a list of tips. It is a structured, repeatable system — five deliberate phases and eight practical tools — that turns career management from guesswork into a compounding skill.
Three laws. Five phases. One system.
Before the five phases, there are three core beliefs that every MCP practitioner internalizes. These are not tips or tactics — they are the philosophical foundation that makes everything else work.
-
Law 1
Be Selfish.
Your career belongs to you — not your manager, not your employer. Taking ownership of your development is not arrogance. It is the only strategy that works long-term.
-
Law 2
Informational interviews are the most powerful career tool available.
More powerful than any resume, any certification, any networking event. A single deliberate conversation with the right person changes the trajectory of a career.
-
Law 3
Knowledge ≠ Experience ≠ Skill.
Knowing something is not the same as having done it. Doing it once is not the same as doing it well. Career planning requires all three — and most people only have one.
Why a system — and not just advice?
Most career guidance is reactive. Update your resume. Practice your interview. LinkedIn-optimize your profile. Each piece is useful in isolation and useless as a strategy.
Modern Career Planning™ is different because it starts before any of that — with identity, clarity, and a deliberate goal. Every tool, every phase, every conversation builds on the one before it.
Career planning is a compoundable skill. The professional who starts building it at 24 does not just outperform the one who waits until 34 — they outperform structurally, because a decade of compounding cannot be recovered.
Each phase builds on the last. None can be skipped.
MCP is a sequential system. The phases are designed in a deliberate order — and the order matters. Phase 1 is not a warm-up. It is the load-bearing foundation everything else rests on.
Identity & Brand
Most career strategies start with the job market. MCP starts with you. Before any conversation about roles, titles, or industries — Phase 1 establishes who you are, what you value, what you do better than most, and how others should describe you when you leave the room.
Without a clear identity, every career decision is a guess. With one, every decision has a filter.
Pathways & Goals
With identity established, Phase 2 explores where that identity can take you. Not just one career path — multiple viable pathways evaluated deliberately, with a written goal that gives every subsequent decision something to calibrate against.
Vague goals produce vague careers. MCP’s Pathways phase forces specificity — a goal with a timeline, a role, and a reason.
Career Advisory Board
No one builds a meaningful career alone. Phase 3 teaches you to intentionally build and manage a personal board of career advisors — people who know your work, your goals, and your industry well enough to give you real guidance.
This is not a networking exercise. It is a structured approach to identifying the four types of advisors every professional needs, and building relationships before you need them.
Learning & Development
A goal without a skills plan is a wish. Phase 4 maps the gap between where you are and where your goal requires you to be — across knowledge, experience, and skill — and builds a deliberate development plan to close it.
This phase is where MCP’s third law becomes practical: Knowledge ≠ Experience ≠ Skill. You cannot close a skill gap by reading about it.
Career Navigation
Phase 5 is where the system meets the real world. With identity clear, a goal written, advisors engaged, and skills in motion — Phase 5 is the ongoing practice of making decisions that move you toward your goal, evaluating opportunities against your strategy, and adjusting without losing direction.
Phase 5 never ends. It is the operating mode of a professionally managed career.
Every phase comes with tools. Not templates — instruments.
The MCP Playbook includes eight purpose-built tools — one for each major deliverable in the system. They are designed to be used, returned to, and updated as your career evolves.
